About the Headshot Session
Generally, a headshot session appointment includes time for the noted amount and digital photos. The digital photos include a certain number of retouches with each session chosen. The photos not selected for retouching are also included as JPEG files but without retouching. Full details on what is included can be read about on the rates page, available from the main menu. Generally, what is not included is: hair and makeup stylist, printing, wardrobes, expenses, and anything else not listed under the rates section.
After the session is complete, and usually within 1-2 business days, an online gallery will be provided via email to review proofs. There you can leave feedback on each photo you select – you can mark it up for editing, leave a note, and so on. Once you have made your selection(s) and submit it, light retouching will be done to those selection(s). Around another 1-2 business days after you have submitted them, you will be emailed a download link where all the photos can be downloaded.
The retouched photos are provided in two formats. The first is a print-quality PNG file so headshots can be printed as 8x10” prints if desired. They are also provided as web-optimized JPEG files (smaller files ideal for posting online, emailing, digital submissions, etc.). The usable photos not selected for retouching are also provided as web-optimized JPEG files.
You should come hair and makeup ready for your session. Some people like to bring a stylist with them. There is an additional fee for this, of $50 per 30 minutes of added time, as doing styling on-site takes up notable studio time. If you need recommendations for a stylist, the studio has a short list of them that previous clients used and said they were satisfied with them. Please feel free to inquire about it – use the contact page to get in touch, available from the main menu. Rates do not include any type of stylist.
The approximate length of each session is listed at the rates page, available from the main menu. This is give or take 5-10 minutes. This counts from the time your appointment is to start to when you leave. It does not count the additional time spent for post-production work, where retouching and delivery of the photos is setup and conducted. To respect sessions that are before or after your session, please arrive not earlier than 10 minutes before your session and expect to finish within 10 minutes or so of the allotted time allowed for a session.
No. Sessions are by appointment only. This is to respect the time and privacy that can occur with intruding upon scheduled or reserved sessions.
It is possible, depending on the day’s workload. Please inquire as early as possible, using the contact page available at the main menu. There is a starting additional fee of $25 for same-day service. We will do a session and then together sit for 10-15 minutes to select the photo(s) you want retouched. You can then leave the same day with the photos on a USB memory stick or with a download link emailed to you.
A look be two things that are essentially the same. If you would like to change your outfit – or look – that is considered two looks (the outfit you came in with plus the outfit you change to). A look can also be within the same outfit but perhaps with a different pose, facial expression, background, etc.
Yes, for the photos you select, based on the session chosen and paid for. There are some experts that claim retouching is bad. This is simply untrue. Retouching allows several fixes to things in a photo that could have conveniently been prevented anyway in the real world. This further makes you look good. For example, it is common to have some dark shadows under your eyes that can vary by day. Retouching will minimize or remove this. Same thing for red eye, acne, stray or fly-away hair, heavy lint on a shirt, and so on. What is usually not retouched are things that are your essence (unless requested), such as a mole, scar, etc. Retouching also includes cropping to standard 8x10 inch for headshots. The remaining photos from a session not chosen for retouching are provided too but, they are not retouched. Some basic image corrections might be applied to them too.
There are well more than one hundred in-studio background options, that vary in colors, gradients, spotlighting, brick, and more. For examples of these, see headshots.thelightcommittee.com/backgrounds/
For cityscape shots, in the downtown Glendale area. We will likely meet at a pre-agreed location on N. Brand Blvd. We will then walk around and take shots wherever the setting seems appropriate for a headshot. For a garden / nature setting, we will meet at a garden or other nature-like area in the Glendale area. It will likely have plenty of different nature looks - greenery, flowers, trees, etc. Custom locations are an option for an additional fee.
Yes. There is a standard liability release for the studio and permission for photography. It can be done digitally from a computer or your phone – no need to print anything. You will receive a copy for your records. It is required to do this before your scheduled session. The digital form will be provided via text or email once your session time is set.
Booking a Session
The best way is to get in touch via any method on the contact page, available from the main menu. Currently there is no system for online reservations of sessions.
Currently there is no such fee. This can continue so long as people do not abuse it by cancelling last minute or by being no-shows. Cancellations or rescheduling notices are preferred with at least two business days’ notice.
This varies depending on current demand. However, it is generally best to plan for at least two days prior to your desired date for a session. Sessions are by appointment only.
Yes, but please inform the studio of such plans as anyone entering the studio should complete a studio liability release before arriving.
Preparing for the Headshot Session
The quick answer is, keep it simple – solid colors are best. For actors and models, consider bright colors as an option. For executives / entrepreneurs, when wearing a tie or similar accessories, consider minimal patterns or colors that contrast well, but are not the same as the suit coat. Generally, keep jewelry to a minimum. The main point is that you want your face to outshine what you are wearing so the focus stays on you and not what you are wearing. However, for a modeling portfolio, the opposite might be preferred for full, three-quarter, or half-body shots – you might want to showcase how you can model an outfit.
If you are getting a haircut before, try to do it at least a few days to a week prior so your hair has time to grow back a bit to your more natural look. Also, just in case you get a bad haircut, there is recovery time. Wearing light makeup is okay – just do not go beyond what you would do on a typical day. Get a good night’s sleep the night before so you look fresh all day the day of your headshots. Also, drink lots of water for 1-2 days before and day of your session, so your skin looks naturally hydrated.
If you normally wear glasses – to meet clients, during your workday, for castings, etc. – it is recommended to wear your glasses. It is a good idea to look as close to how you would look on a typical day. However, sunglasses are almost never recommended.
It is usually best to keep jewelry to a minimum. But again, it is okay to wear some, usually the same amount of jewelry you would for a typical workday, client meeting, casting, etc.
